Rogation Sunday

Rogation Sunday is on May 25th.

  • Beating the bounds
  • Blessing the crops
  • Praying for farmers

An ancient tradition which we shall revive in our Benefice. 9.30am brief service in Taddy, then we walk (plus dogs and kids) to Shutford for 11am Holy Communion.

On the way we will pause to bless the crops, pray for the local farmers, their families and staff, their animals and fields, and to thank God for the beauty of the area in which we live.

Please DO be part of the walk if you can; otherwise why not drive to Shutford and join us for the 11am Holy Communion? You could book a Sunday lunch at the George and Dragon? And then walk home more slowly in the afternoon.

The walk WILL take place even if it is wet and horrid. Bring your waterproofs! Everyone is welcome in church at either end – including dogs and noisy kids – but if your boots are muddy you might remove them.

The word “Rogation” comes from the Latin verb rogare, meaning “to ask”, which reflects the beseeching of God for the appeasement of his anger and for protection from calamities; we shall be asking for safety and success for our farmers, and for a good harvest later in the year.

The world's favourite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May. (Edwin Way Teale)
