Rev'd Ronald Hawkes

Hi, I’m Ronald, Rector of the Wykeham Benefice since September 20th 2012 … so still the “new boy”. Like Tracy Emin I was born in Margate, and grew up near Dover, and am a proud Man of Kent. I trained as a teacher, and taught in Warwick for 9 years before going off to Lincoln Theological College to train as a priest. It was in Lincoln that I met Liz and we were married in the cathedral 25 years ago on a freezing December day.

I have served as a clergyman in… Coventry, Bexhill on Sea, Oundle, Canterbury, Herne Bay, and now here. I have ministered as… a Curate, a Team Vicar, a Vicar, a School Chaplain, a Minor Canon, a Scout Chaplain, a Hospital Chaplain, and now as a country parson (and also the Training Officer for the Deddington Deanery).

One of my great loves is English Choral music – the sort you find in cathedrals. I also like French cheese, classic cars, dogs, walking, reading poetry, playing the piano, trying to oil paint … and people. In the first months here people have gone out of their way to make me welcome and I am delighted to be in this part of the world. I look forward to meeting lots of you whether in the church or in the pub … I’m a human being as well as a Vicar !
