The Carice Singers

On Saturday evening 6th April, we were all delighted to be present at a concert in Holy Trinity Church, when a group of sixteen young singers - who are all reading music at university - came to Sibford to enthrall, entertain and inspire us all. The church was packed and the audience also came from surroundiing villages, as the word spread that here was an evening not to be missed.

Their young voices filled the church with a clarity and purity one usually  only hears in a vast cathedral. The choice of music was charming, ranging from Bach, Bruckner and Britten in the first half, and moving on to lighter music by English composers of the 19th and 20th century - Elgar, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Warlock, Holst and Percy Grainger.

The group is founded and conducted by George Parriss, who grew up near Shipston-on-Stour, and his young singers all stayed in the village, and were most charming guests. We hope to see much more of them, and it is obvioius that they are going to become one of our top choirs. A record contract is in the offing. With a very generous collection at the end of the concert, a splendid £1,200 was raised for the church.

We are very grateful to Jupe Marshall for this article.
