Shutford news

The Village Festival in the Manor Field was held on a lovely warm sunny afternoon and evening with a good crowd of visitors. £6000 was raised to be shared by the village hall and church. The event was organised by Rita Livesey to whom we are grateful. The church`s share will be used for building insurance and repairs to the font and electrics.

The May Christian Aid door to door collection raised £555: this money will help the plight of refugees in Europe and elsewhere.

The new village hall was officially opened by Mrs Victoria Prentis MP on Friday 14th July. The village hall committee are congratulated on making a dream a reality. Tim Rootes and Sir Dominic Cadbury paid tribute to Gordon Freeman, who managed the project, and Rita Livesey, who encouraged everyone through emails, The Shutford News and face to face to get involved. Finance was always a concern but thanks to substantial pledges from villagers the hall was built. There have also been various grants obtained, donation of building materials, kitchen fittings, etc and most importantly villagers' time and skills. Without local tradesmen such as Eric, Andrew, Ross, Eamon and others plus whole families painting and decorating this project could have been out of reach. Well done everyone. The hall, pub and church are in a triangle and the centre of village life and great assets to our community.

The Oxford Historic Churches Trust annual Ride and Stride takes place on 9th September. All our Benefice churches will be open to receive visitors. We hope that many villagers will take part this year to raise funds for our local churches.

This year`s Harvest Thanksgiving is on Sunday 24th September at 6.00pm with a Harvest Supper and Sale the following evening at 7.30pm in the village hall.

A man was excited because his local newspaper was hosting a pun contest. He stayed up all night carefully writing ten puns and submitted them the next morning. When the results were announced, he checked to see if he had won but, alas, no pun in ten did.
